W-4 basics without the folklore
People still say “I claimed 2 allowances.” That language died with the 2020 Form W-4. The current form asks for filing status, a multiple-jobs checkbox, a dependents worksheet, other income, deductions, and an extra dollar amount to withhold each period.
What still moves the needle
- Filing status chooses the standard deduction and bracket widths payroll applies.
- Dependents reduce withholding roughly in line with the Child Tax Credit — if the children actually qualify.
- Multiple jobs exists because two “single job” W-4s both assume a full standard deduction.
- Extra withholding is the blunt instrument when you have freelance income or a bonus pattern.
What PayNetUS simplifies
Our dependents field is a flat $2,200 credit per person with no phaseout and no qualifying-child test. We do not offer a “multiple jobs” switch. If those facts matter, use the IRS estimator or a tax pro, then compare to this site’s sketch.
Exempt status is rare
Writing “Exempt” on a W-4 is only for people who had no federal liability last year and expect none this year. It is not a tip, a protest, or a way to pad a summer check.
